Too Many Zooz is brass house from NYC, who gained fame when a video of one of their subway performances went viral.  They’ve got David “King of Sludge” Parks on drums, Lou Pellegrino on baritone sax, and Matt Doe on trumpet.

Seriously, this band is incredible.  The grove these guys get into is incredible.  These are some seriously talented musicians.  Their first album Subway Gawdz was released in June of last year.  They are currently playing shows in California and will be in New York in June.

They also did a Ted Talk, so that’s pretty cool.

“New Music”: Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes in Modern Ruin

School is over and I am getting into the swing of summer.  Time to load the trebuchet.

For fans of Queens of the Stone Age and Royal Blood

Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes is an English punk rock band formed in 2015 and are signed to International Death Cult.  Their second album Modern Ruin peaked at number 7 on the UK charts.  The group consists of frontman Frank Carter, Dean Richardson on guitar, Tom ‘Tank’ Barclay on bass, Gareth Grover on drums, and Thomas Mitchener who also produced the album on guitars and synth.

frank-carter-and-the-rattlesnakes-modern-ruinCarter was previously of English punk group Gallows (which I listened to back in the day), and English-American rock group Pure Love.  FCATR’s first album Blossom saw a return to the style of Gallows, something that had been departed from with Pure Love.  Modern Ruin see’s another departure from the aggressive vocals of Gallows to a more singable album that still moves at breakneck speed.

Guys.  I’m only slightly obsessed with this album.  Modern Ruin is full of hard-hitting riffs that are catchy as heck paired with catchy as heck choruses.  Carter’s vocals are heavily ‘verbed, adding an interesting, dream-like feel to the tracks.

There is a fantastic series on FCATR’s YouTube where Carter gives a short commentary for each track on Modern Ruin.  I would give all of them a watch, it is a very cool look into the album and the life of a performer.

Favourite tracks include Bluebelle, Lullaby, Snake Eyes, Vampires, Wild Flowers, God is My Friend, and Modern Ruin.

‘Coming Soon’: Royal Blood and Queens of the Stone Age

AHHHHH, my second favourite music duo is releasing their second album this June, QotSA are getting back in it with a follow up to …Like Clockwork, Balance and Composure are releasing a single for Record Store Day…I’m pretty excited about it, k?

Royal Blood are a UK duo of drums, bass, vocals.  The most important part of any live mix.  I loved their debut album in 2014, and I am giddy over this.  Check out the teaser below and the official video for the single ‘Lights Out’.

(The official video for ‘Lights Out’ is a strange milk bath rave.  So, I mean, if you want nightmares tonight…watch it?  You have been warned.)

Queens of the Stone Age.  Man.  I wasn’t sure about them the first time I listened to …Like Clockwork, but the riffs drive hard and the overall dryness to the records draw you in.  Lullabies to Paralyze is probably my favourite album of theirs, and it made me check out …Like Clockwork again.  We don’t have much info on the new album, but I’m hoping for a summer release.

‘New Music’: AS IT IS in okay.

Since it actually feels like summer, here’s a summery album that was released in January.

I wasn’t planning on reviewing this album, but I’m currently listening to it, and I figured I might as well.

If you want to be reminded of the 2000’s infatuation with pop punk, then AS IT IS is the band for you!  AII is pop punk from the UK.  Frontman Patty Walters is joined by guitarists Benjamin Biss and Andy Westhead, bassist Alistair Testo, and drummer Patrick Foley.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I went to listen to this album, but it wasn’t pop punk.  In fact, I think I forgot that pop punk still exists.  This serves as a reminder that genre’s don’t cease to exist when I stop listening to them (I will never be rid of country music, will I?).  Their Spotify description compared them to early Taking Back Sunday which I find only slightly hilarious.

The tracks are appropriately catchy, reminding me of those awkward middle school years I try to forget about.  Pop music is called infectious for a reason; this album would be perfect as the background for a summer pool party.  In fact, if they don’t release a music video featuring such an event, I will be disappointed.  The album really brings to mind The All-American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, Boys Like Girls, and the like which I only listen to when I have to entertain the 11-15 age-range.

Why is Patty pointing so aggressively?  Why are they all so happy?  Why did they steal the dance theme from Back to the Future?  Why is he headbanging to a light pop riff?  These are the questions my friends.

Despite nostalgia, the title okay. pretty much sums up my feelings about the album.  It’s not bad, but it’s not something I am going to listen to probably ever again.  Sorry lads.

‘New Music’: Cloud Nothings in Life Without Sound

I found these guys while exploring Wikipedia’s list of new music for 2017.  I had been disapointed in the lack of new music I listened to in 2016 and now I have a spreadsheet with most of the new releases for this year (through February, it’s a lot of stuff, and I didn’t even bother with the rap or country and I’ll never be able listen to it all and March is almost over and, and, *cue overwhelmed flailing).  Thanks to Spotify Premium for students (#notsponsored but call me?), I’ve been able to listen to a good amount of new music, including this album.

Cloud Nothings is an American indie-rock band from Cleveland Ohio formed by vocalist and guitarist Dylan Baldi in 2009.  Filling out the roster is Jayson Gerycz on drums, TJ Duke on bass, and Chris Brown on guitar.  The group has released 5 studio albums, Life Without Sound being the most recent release.

“Up to the Surface” is a great intro track, setting you up for the mood, laid back but full of energy.  The vocals are dark in colour and with the surrounding instrumentation the whole album has a warm feel to it.

My favourite tracks include “Up to the Surface”, “Things Are Right With You”, “Darkened Rings”, “Modern Act”, and “Sight Unseen”.

If you’ve ever heard of (and like) Eyeshine or Ellengarden, I’d highly recommend Cloud Nothings (and also those other two).  These three bands would make a great summery playlist for those sunny days that aren’t quite warm enough (like it has been off and on this March.  Stop teasing me, I just want to be outside).

‘Books’: Robin McKinley in Rose Daughter

With Disney’s live action remake of Beauty and the Beast hitting theaters, I thought I’d revisit my favourite version of the story.

I adore Robin McKinley books.  Her stories are so captivating and magical while maintaining realism with her down to earth heroines.  Rose Daughter is McKinley’s second re-telling of the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, following Beauty and her two older sisters Lionheart and Jeweltongue as they adjust to their new life without wealth.  One of the things I love about this story is the depth of character that all three girls are given.  Despite their background roles in the over all story, Lionheart and Jeweltongue are interesting characters in their own right, not simply existing to further Beauty’s growth.  I would love to read about what Lionheart and Jeweltongue did while Beauty was tending roses in the Beast’s glasshouse.

Rose Daughter is probably my favourite version of Beauty and the Beast (yup, I like  it better than Disney.  Come. At. Me.), which is par for the course because I love McKinley versions.  Everything about the story flows naturally, the strength of our characters to step up to their circumstances is shown through their actions, and the theme of love in all its forms (romantic, familial, platonic) are expertly woven through the story.  Our leading ladies are clever, witty, engaging, and their growth is a joy a witness.

Can you tell I love this book?  Just wait until I do a write up on Spindle’s End.

‘New Music’: ONE OK ROCK in Ambitions

We are back!

Moving right along with January releases we see ONE OK ROCK grace the front page of iTunes.

Ambitions is ONE OK ROCK’s 8th Japanese release, or their second American release, depending on which version you have.  Their previous album 35xxxv was released in the same way.  This review will be on the American version and I will write up a separate review for the JP exclusives (sometime in the near distant future)

I highly recommend going to their Japanese site, allowing Google to translate the page for you, and compare that to their English site.  The translation differences are quite entertaining.

ONE OK ROCK formed in 2005 when Toru Yamashita asked his high school friends to start a band.  ONE OK ROCK is comprised of Taka (vocals), Toru (guitars), Ryota (bass), and Tomoya (drums).  They released their first album Zeitakubyo in 2007.  Since then they’ve released Beam of Light (2008), Kanjo Effect (2008), Niche Syndrome (2010), Zankyo Reference (2011), JinseixBoku= (2013), 35xxxv (2015), and finally Ambitions (2017).

The only real stylistic difference this album has compared to their others is the lack of Japanese vocals on the international version.  The track “Jaded” features Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low, and “Take What You Want” features 5 Seconds of Summer.  I’ve never been a fan of ATL (and I honestly can’t find Alex in that song), or 5SOS (but the vocals all mesh well, it’s a great addition to the song).  That sentence was never a complete thought…

Ambitions is an anthem from beginning to end.  The songs are catchy, bouncy, and engaging.  I imagine this album is what their concerts are like, lots of people jumping and having a good time, not minding that you spilled your beverage on them.  Anybody want to take me to Japan in May to see them?  No?  Shoot.

Favourite songs include “Bombs Away”, “Taking Off”, “American Girls”,0 “Start Again”, and “Take What You Want”

I’d give this album a 3.5 out of 5 for now (I’ll combine the scores when I listen to the Japanese version).  While it is a great album, it doesn’t get me in the same way that JinsexBoku= did.
